Bethurum’s album, Dossier, defies the many micro genres of electronic music by pulling from almost all while acting as a slave to none. The local producer uses as a starting point something like downtempo drum-and-bass. But then, in an ADD-like quest for stimulation and meaning, mashes it up with breakbeat, tribal, deep house vocals, and ambient refrains, creating a twilightscape of sounds splattered, Pollock-like, over a wall-dominating canvas. So, from track to track, you might encounter the gear-grinding wake up call of “Future Proof” or the rough-edge propulsion of “Miss Favela,” whose grittiness is tempered by a sprinkling of light keys. Intrigued? Then you’re in luck, as Bethurum’s disc is available for purchase here and preview here. Correction: Dossier is a solo project by Benjamin Bethurum and not a collaboration, as I had originally reported. The post has been changed.
