Band: Dyme DefAlbum: Yuk The WorldLabel: Yuk RecordsRelease: Dec 6, 2011An album with 23 tracks that clocks in at around 78 minutes will likely have a little something for everyone; whether listeners are patient enough to wait for their slice is up to them. Dyme Def’s third full-length Yuk The World contains more than a few high-grade moments–some of the group’s best–and its share of monotonous “let’s party” jams. It has a few personal stories of struggle, lots of standard DD-formula brag tracks, and a couple of refreshingly left field joints. Truly a bit of everything. To help you out though, I made a YTW best-of list here:”Dreamin””Opportunity Knocks”‘When It Rains””Fresher In My Kicks””The Heist Pt. 1″”Dizzy Izzy””Time Flies””Outro”These are the tracks that I felt stuck out above the rest, and I’ve realized that my flavor of DD seems to be the more futuristic or left-field sounding. Their production is always clean, but on occasion, [local beatsmith extraordinaire] BeanOne can slip into the derivative rehash of golden-era instrumentals. For the most part though, Bean brings the heat here. Rap-wise, MCs Brainstorm, S.E.V., and Fearce Villain do their thing as admirably as ever: there are tons of one-line witticisms; boastful measures; and so forth. They do them all well. A neat feature to the album are the brief skits at the end of each song. They’re never a focal point like on so many rap albums, and really just act as bonus moments of comedy or insight. One of the best skits is an interview at the end of “Fresher In My Kicks” that involves a fake (but painfully realistic) MC named Murder Murder who gives an interview that I swear I could have recorded around town over the last couple of years “you know whamsayin’?”
