You’ll get a free copy of “Laredo” with your order. The second track released from Band of Horses upcoming album, Infinite Arms, is a guitar-driven southern rock song. “Laredo” is simple and steady. Ben Birdwell’s voice is less high-pitched than on Everything All the Time, and he’s not pushing for a falsetto, instead just layering his clear vocals for a rounded, sonic effect. Bridwell’s and Tyler Ramsey’s guitars have just a twinge of distortion, at times fuzzed out, but for the most part the chords and plucked notes are crisp. The result is lovely, but there’s a downside here: “Laredo” might sound polished, but it lacks pizazz. There are no dramatic crescendos and decrescendos, like the ones that morphed “Funeral” or “No One’s Gonna Love You” from indie folk into symphonic, inspiring songs. Here’s hoping that the rest of Infinite Arms sounds more like “Compliments,” the album’s barn-burning, fast-paced other single. With swirling guitars and driving drums, that’s a song worth getting excited about.
