ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers) puts on a popular yearly wine-tasting event in San Francisco, and after a 12-year absence they’re bringing a smaller version back to Seattle with the ZAP 2009 Zinfandel Grand Tasting at the South Seattle Community College Arboretum this Sunday. There aren’t very many zinfandel producers in the Northwest–it’s really a California thing–so the event is a chance for Seattle wine-os to taste over 100 zins from 40 different wineries like Ravenswood, Deep Purple Winery, Cline Cellars, and Proulx. Winemakers and winery owners will also be on hand to answer questions, and hopefully to explain why zinfandel is now called “America’s Heritage Wine.” This year they’ve partnered with Seattle Uncorked and South Seattle Community College Culinary Arts Program for a Barbecue Cook-off Competition. Ten students will create a barbecue appetizer to go with the zinfandel in the hope of winning the “People’s Choice Award” and a prize from the ZAP wineries. $40. 4-7 p.m. Sun., Jul. 26.For more food events like this plus restaurant gossip and date ideas, check out our Big Bites e-newsletter, sent out every Tuesday.
