1. The long wait for the opening of Cassis in West Seattle is over. Owner Jef Fike opened his doors yesterday after announcing last year he’d reopen the French Bistro on Alki. Fike closed Cassis on Capitol Hill back in 2004. The West Seattle Blog has a preview.
2. The 4th Annual Washington Beer Open House takes place tomorrow from noon to 5 PM at more than 70 breweries statewide. than 70 breweries statewide. You’ll get to poke around behind the scenes, talk to brewers, and sample some beer, natch. Depending on the brewery, you might come across music, rare barrel tastings, new seasonal beers, finger food, growler sales, and more. Local participating breweries include Elysian Brewery, Epic Ales, Fremont Brewing, Hilliard’s Beer, Reuben’s Brews, and a great many more. Washington Beer Commission has a full list.
3. Starting Monday, you can once again order food with your drinks at Capitol Hill’s Highline. The music venue/dive bar announced back in August they’d discontinue food service. But the vegan pub grub menu – with a few updates – is back on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4 to 8 PM. Highline expects to work up to nightly food service soon.
4. FootLaos, the annual fundraising event benefiting a Laotian elementary school takes place tonight at 1927 Events in Belltown. The fundraiser features music, drinks, and food from TanakaSan, Tom Douglas Restaurants, and Pho Cyclo. Tickets are on sale at Brown Paper Tickets, and you can also contribute on Indiegogo.
5. In an incredibly disturbing (though not completely surprising) photo series, Radiolab shows the shrinking sizes of fish caught out of Key West, Fla. The photos were taken by charter companies at the same dock beginning in 1958. Present day photos show teensy fish compared to the old days’ enormous catches.
