1. Shanik’s new market is now open next door to its South Lake Union dining room. If you’ve made the trek to sibling eatery Vij’s in Vancouver and shopped at neighboring restaurant Rangoli, the set up will look familiar–grab and go hot meals like curried chickpeas with rice are sold alongside packaged curries and mango lassis. But unlike Rangoli, you won’t find a second full-scale restaurant, just a takeaway counter. Market hours are 11:30 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Friday. Also, Shanik now offers reservations for half of its tables, with the other half designated for walk-in diners. Click here to book a table online.

2. Live music, eats and dulces for trick-or-treaters are part of Dia de Muertos parties at La Carta de Oaxaca in Ballard and Mezcaleria Oaxaca in Queen Anne on Halloween. Click here for the details. Mezcaleria Oaxaca’s second location on Pine and Summit in Capitol Hill is scheduled to open in early 2014.

3. Kraken Congee is popping up at Blackboard Bistro in West Seattle this Monday, October 21 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Dishes include smoked turkey congee with foraged mushrooms and cranberry and quinoa congee with roasted winter squash and kale. The full menu is posted over here.

4. Dick Spady, co-founder and president of the 60-year-old Dick’s Drive-In Restaurants turns 90 today! He’ll be greeting customers with cake and balloons at the NE 45th Dick’s Drive-In between
