1. It’s hard to believe that less than a year ago Pioneer Square’s restaurant and bar boom had not yet begun. Joining neighborhood eateries that launched in 2013, including Matt Dillon’s Bar Sajor, Russell Flint’s Rain Shadow Meats Squared and Brendan McGill’s Altstadt will be Pizzeria Gabbiano (that’s gull in Italian.) The concept for the forthcoming pizza place from Mike Easton (who also operates the insanely popular Pioneer Square pasta spot Il Corvo) is modeled after Roman-style street pies, with dough based on a 150 year-old starter procured and cultivated by Easton. Look for a spring 2014 opening inside a 1,000 sq. ft. storefront on 2nd and Main.
2. Calling all craft beer-ophiles: This Saturday at 4:00 pm, Brouwer’s in Fremont hosts a rare beer tasting and book signing to promote the new release, “The Brewtal Truth Guide to Extreme Beers: An All-Excess Pass to Brewing’s Outer Limits.” Todd Haug from Surly Brewing in Minneapolis will be pouring eight brews not available in Washington at the event, while “Brewtal Truth Guide” author Adem Tepedelen will sign copies of his book, which happens to include three Surly beers that are being brought in for the tasting. A second tasting and book release party is scheduled for December 12 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Beer Junction in West Seattle.
