This year, the day before Valentine’s Day just happens to be a holiday in its own right–namely Lunar New Year. And while just about every couple on earth will be fighting for a table, some fondue and a couple ridiculously pink fruit martinis on Sunday the 14th, things around the restaurant world are likely to look considerably less crazy on Saturday the 13th.Which, to my mind, makes the 13th the perfect night for going out. And since you’re going to be going out anyway, you might just as well make a night of it by finding yourself a good party. And what could be better than a New Year’s Eve party thrown in the middle of February?Folks are going to be celebrating all over Seattle on Saturday (particularly down in the International District where a whole day of events have been planned), but I just got off the blower with manager Tim Clark and manager Michael Le from the Lakeside Bistro (the modern Vietnamese restaurant and occasional jazz club that just opened a few months back at 11425 Rainier Avenue S.), and it looks like they’re going to be throwing a little party of their own.Clark told me that the 13th is going to be “more of just a celebration.” There’ll be some music, some food–an intimate thing in a setting that, with just 40 seats, is already pretty intimate to start. Le, Lakeside’s chef and owner, said that with Valentine’s Day the next day (and a special menu already up on the boards for those looking to express their love in terms of prawn cocktails, tempura and wok-fired filet mignon), the New Year’s Eve fete was going to be “a little simple, a little less expensive,” with a separate dinner package and some tables cleared out of the way to make room for the band.Still, celebrating the Lunar New Year with a dumplings, lettuce wraps, hot-and-sour whitefish and some ponzu-and-papaya BBQ duck? That sounds alright to me.
