This would be the day that Jess and I reveal that we share a single brain. This week I also had a come to Jeebus moment where I realized that November hath 30 days and therefore I hath two more weeks to hit Dine Around Seattle. So at some point in the past couple of days a friend and I slipped into Ballard?s Market Street Grill, a restaurant the Weekly reviewed two months before I joined the staff, so I?d never had a chance to try it for myself. The restaurant was half full but quickly filling up as I entered, and I asked the waiter how the promotion was going. ?Oh, the name change [from 25 for $25] threw people off,? she told me, ?so it?s taken a while for it to get going. But things have definitely picked up this week.? There?s been some grumbling about the price jump from $25 to $30, but I think $30 freed chefs up to offer more options. Now, I obviously didn?t go to Market Street Bistro during the last promotion, so I can’t compare, but a $25 prix fixe doesn?t give chefs much room to show off (ice cream for dessert, anyone?). We had our choice of three salads and a soup for appetizer, and then we could choose from everything else on the entree and dessert menus. In the case of the scallops with white beans — normally $29 — it was quite a deal. The dish lacked the black truffle (most likely truffle oil) listed on the menu, but the chef didn?t stint on the three, fat, perfectly cooked scallops. And the chicken with potato-pancetta-sage hash and a roasted-chicken jus? Darn tasty at any price. Total cost of the meal with tax and tip: $50 a person. Not something you can do every day, but roughly 18% savings. We also noticed that the service speeded up considerably once we ordered off the 30 for $30 menu — the kitchen whipped those entrees out almost as fast as we could finish our salads, and my plate was lifted away before I?d finished and placed my utensils in the parallel position to indicate so. But they were unflaggingly polite, and by the end of the night, busy — customers were still filing in when I left around 9. Have you done Dine Around Seattle this year? Why or why not?
