The Truck: Taqueria 3 Reyes, also known as Los Tres Reyes. Found Monday through Saturday (10 a.m. – 9 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. – 7 p.m.) at 2015 E. Union St.The Fare: Tacos, tortas, and burritos. The Stop: Everything about Los Tres Reyes — its food, its location — screams “no frills.” Parked in the lot of a Central District car repair shop that at first glance looks more like a run-down, abandoned Shell gas station, Los Tres Reyes is a true reminder that “no frills” doesn’t always mean “no good.” This truck is a bright yellow gem amongst a collection of deflated tires and sad-looking fenders that have surely seen happier days. Sidle up to the truck, which is parked underneath an old Shell sign, and take a gander at the menu. You’ll find tortas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and mulitas (taco sandwiches, basically) for prices that’ll have you suspicious. $1 for a taco, albeit, a three-inch diamater one, seems too good to be true. Eat assured that this price is no joke. Los Tres Reyes has the usual meat selection of steak, pork, chicken, chorizo, and lengua, and each taco is filled to the brim with cilantro, onion, rice, lettuce, and a spicy salsa. Wolfing down these babies, which are slapped together efficiently, is no pretty sight, but they sure are tasty. Take the lengua taco, for example. Cow tongue might not be everybody’s go-to thing when they’re craving Mexican food, but at Los Tres Reyes, the lengua is soft and flavorful. Amidst the small crowd of buff dudes getting their lunch on, was a lone woman who I overheard ordering a vegetarian taco, which at Los Tres Reyes, is an actual menu item. Instead of piling on meat, they pile on black beans. This woman said that she loves the vegetarian tacos and burritos, and that she and her coworker come here two or three times a week. And she doesn’t seem completely off-base: the vegetarian tacos are, in their three-inch diameter glory, pretty hearty.You also can’t go wrong with the tortas, which at this truck, seem more like sloppy joes than sandwiches. Each torta comes with jalapenos, mayonnaise, lettuce, onion, avocado, cheese, and beans, all which seep out the sides of the sandwich with each bite.
