The Place: Danish Bakery, 731 Front St., 509-548-7514, LEAVENWORTH.The Hole: This weekend saw a trip over the Cascades to celebrate with a friend mere days (and an enormous stomach) away from bringing new life into the world. It was also a chance to enjoy things like weather in the 90s and swimming in a river without risking hypothermia. The trip back along Highway 2 wound through Leavenworth, a bizarre Bavarian-themed town, complete with an Old World Germany-styled McDonald’s.It seemed an ideal place to hunt down a baked good–specifically a donut or bagel. But neither seemed readily available in the lederhosen-lined main street through town. Stumbling into The Danish Bakery, we found our holey solution: cannoli! The Shit: Yes, this baked good is Italian. But any European-themed bakery would be crazy not to carry them. The basic recipe is: Roll pastry into a tube and fry the shit out of it. Stuff it with whipped cream or mousse or ice cream. Cover with chocolate syrup. Wait for heart to explode. The hole of Danish Bakery’s cannoli are filled with a chocolate mousse that oozes out the ends, but is never runny. It is so fatty your lips feel like you’d rubbed them in room-temperature lard. The crust of our cannoli wasn’t as perfectly crisp as you might hope from something that was fried. But it did its job of mostly holding everything together and giving the mousse a bit of crunch. And did I mention the fact that it was fried? So it was still delicious.Cannoli might not fit the Bavarian theme of little Leavenworth, but a fried hole stuffed with chocolate mousse is enough to make me want to yodel.Follow Voracious on Twitter and Facebook.
