Let’s get the bad news out of the way first. Gene Porter, owner of beloved Southern-style barbeque joint Dixie’s BBQ in Bellevue, died Sunday of cancer. He was 71. Porter was famous on the Eastside for his mean hot sauce – aka “Man Sauce.” He used to wander through the restaurant offering customers a try on a toothpick. The Seattle Times reports that Dixie’s BBQ is closed this week, as his family, friends, and staff mourn the loss of “The Man.” R.I.P., buddy.

In much brighter news, award-winning chef Tom Douglas announced this morning that he will open multiple restaurants in Terry Avenue Building (Amazon.com’s headquarters) at South Lake Union by mid-2011. That’s all the info we have for now. Stay tuned.
So you wanna be like Douglas? Make food, make even more cash? Here’s a start: Italian eatery La Spiga on Capitol Hill is calling all amateur cooks to submit their original recipes for a shot to be featured on the spring menu, as well as win dinner for two. Now that’s something to brag about. Recipes will be judged in several categories, including how well they represent authentic Italian cuisine and potential for restaurant service. (Click here for the deets.) The deadline is March 22. The winner will be announced March 31. Good luck!
