Shawn Kemp owns the newest addition to Queen Anne: Oskar’s Kitchen.

The Hours: 3-6 p.m. and10 p.m.-midnight, Mon.-Fri.

The Digs: Oskar’s Kitchen is a new Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and bar owned by former Sonic superstar Shawn Kemp and named after his pet fish. Located just four doors up from Peso’s in lower Queen Anne, it provides a refuge for those who prefer a quieter, more intimate night out on the town. A lounge called the Bubble Room boasts a charming bartender named Kyriakos Kyrkos, a giant fish tank, and–most noticeable during our Friday night visit–Kemp himself, chatting and drinking with patrons and amicably posing for photos.

The Deal: $4 appetizers, draft beer, house wine, and well drinks. Upon arriving, Kyrkos also serves a complimentary basket of pesto pita bread with melted cheese. Mmmm. Other steals include sliced angus beef on ciabatta rolls, baby back ribs, and garlic fries. Not necessarily food you want to chow down on before a makeout session, but if that’s what you’re looking for, you’d be at Peso’s, right?

The Verdict: Kemp scores a layup-and-one with this happy hour. The prices are affordable and the service is great. (The free pita bread is a really nice touch.) Oskar’s is a cozy establishment that gives off a “Where everybody knows your name” vibe, and is sure to draw a steady number of regulars in the months to come.
