Seattle restaurant openings can sometimes seem like a rush of lemmings. So amid the endless pizza and sushi spots that have sprung up in and around Ballard, we’re glad to see the arrival of a cuisine that’s considerably less abundant in our town: Plaka Estiatorio, which opened its doors last week. Plaka is a neighborhood in Athens, and estiatorio is Greek for restaurant. The family-run place serves traditional recipes using imported Greek products as well as local ingredients. Dishes include gyros, souvlaki, avgolemono soup, and papousaki (eggplant stuffed with lamb and beef). Note: The new spot is closed Sundays and Mondays, so you’ll have to start the week with pizza and sushi.
