Seattle is well known and nationally recognized as one of America’s top cities for cocktail bars. But outside the handful of famous bars, how do you find the dozens of others that also have skilled, savvy bartenders serving great cocktails? Well . . . there’s an app for that. Wendy Miller–founder of LUPEC Seattle, blogger at luggagetag, and consummate barstool warmer–has teamed with Sutro Media to create the Seattle Cocktail Culture app for the iPhone or iPad. She has scoured the city, sipped hundreds of drinks (tough gig, right?), and distilled her picks for Seattle’s best places for a well-crafted cocktail. And by well-crafted, we’re talking things like housemade bitters, fresh-squeezed juices, top-shelf spirits, hand-carved ice, and quality mixers. If your idea of a cocktail is vodka and soda . . . you don’t need this app.The app ($1.99 on iTunes) includes over 70 bars from Capitol Hill to Ballard and West Seattle to the Eastside. They are listed alphabetically, but can be sorted by neighborhood, distance from your current location, and cost. You can also filter bars into categories like cocktail masters, live music, free wi-fi, happy hours, hotel bars, and patios. At the launch party for the Seattle Cocktail Culture app last weekend, Miller exclaimed, “Why does my app have a category for hotel bars? Because sometimes I want a drink at 10:30 in the morning.” There’s a bar for every occasion. The descriptions for each bar offer more personality and opinion than other guides, print or online. Miller introduces you to the people behind each bar: the bartenders and owners that make each place special (and which days you’ll find them working). There are recommendations for must-try cocktails or ingredients, plus descriptions of each place’s ambience. Each bar’s listing includes the facts: hours, address, website, and telephone number, but there are also photos and info on happy hours when applicable. Click on the map to get directions from your current location, or see an estimated taxi cost and link to call a cab. The navigation makes it easy to move on to the next listing, or back to the list of all bars. The share feature only offers an e-mail option (no Twitter or Facebook), but does let you send the entire listing to a friend. Other than that, the Seattle Cocktail Culture app is a valuable tool for finding a great drink in the city. Miller plans to keep it up-to-date as businesses change hours and personnel. Her work really never ends–and for $1.99, you can reap the rewards of all that work.Follow Voracious on Twitter and Facebook.
