Most of the labels are unfamiliar, the brands so boutique or relentlessly small-batch that I’d need an entire second life just to study them the way I have food. Who knew, for example, that a man could ever need seven different kinds of bitters? I have gone most of my life without needing even one.”That was from this week’s tandem review of the Zig Zag Cafe and Tavern Law–a piece looking at the food served at places better known for the ways their bartenders sling cocktails. And the picture? That’s from this week’s accompanying slideshow, shot by Peter Mumford.Photo courtesy Peter MumfordWhile the drinks at both places were amazing, it was the menu at Tavern Law that really surprised me–an ever-changing chalkboard list of simple American classics lit up by the attentions of cooks and chefs who understand the noble challenge of making even the most overdone things–a burger, a side of potatoes, a plate of fried chicken–not just new again, but thrilling as well. And Peter managed to capture some of that energy with this week’s spread of photos–showing the Tavern Law burger, the fried chicken and some of the bar’s best cocktails all in their natural environment.
