Go check out the new look Friday during the U-District Arts Walk.I’m a big fan of the whole arts-walk tradition, which is really just a great excuse to get out, wander around, have a few drinks, eat free snacks, and admire paintings, drawings, and sculptures by talented, tragically underpaid people. (No, your 3-year-old could not have done that abstract!)This month’s Art Walk in the U District is extra-special because of a bonus stop on the regular route of coffee shops, cafes, and bistros. The U District Food Bank is opening its space and inviting the neighborhood to come in and see what it’s all about.Full disclosure: I’m on the board of the food bank, and was a fan even before I joined, but I’m certainly not the only one who recognizes its unique approach to the mammoth task of providing staples for those in need. More than 1,100 families, many of them the working poor, are served each week in a relatively tiny space set up like a miniature grocery store. That way, customers can choose what they’ll use instead of being handed a random bag of stuff.Go check it out! If/when you do drop by Friday between 6 and 9 p.m., there will be live music and appetizers from Cameron Catering. And of course there will be art on display, including a mural painted in the food bank by high-school student Alexis Huseby.Or, hey, if you can’t make it and just want to make a donation online, go for it! You know it will give you that buzz known as the donor’s high.Follow Voracious on Twitter and Facebook.
