Our tribute to the holiday services provided by Seattle’s Best Dive Bars continues with the Wedgwood Broiler’s lounge (8230 35th Ave. N.E.).In the Midwest, the concept of an establishment that’s family restaurant in the front, dive bar in the back is considered a right. These restaurants still have fish fry Fridays, hosting families on the weekends and dad after work in the bar. They also usually serve a coveted $15 prime rib plate, probably with frozen vegetables and definitely with a baked potato still in foil if they know what’s good for them. I recently searched in untested waters for my childhood favorite, to no avail, even though I had been told repeatedly of a place–exactly like those I remembered–that serves the best, blue-collar prime rib experience in town every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Wedgwood Broiler (“While it lasts,” says the menu). The special, and full menu, is available in the completely separate lounge which manages to maintain the atmosphere and feel of 1979 to this day.But it’s THIS PIECE about the Wedgwood Broiler, and its 72-ounce challenge, that requires rereading.
