Long known as an intellectual repository for thoughtful and well-reasoned food criticism, Playboy this month has, at long last, weighed in on the “who got da best pizza” debate. Why? The better question is why not. Everyone loves pizza. More importantly, everyone loves fighting about pizza–who has the best, the worst, the most authentic, what style rules (New York thin) and what shouldn’t really be considered pizza at all (Chicago-style deep-dish which might just as well be a casserole). But this top-ten isn’t really about arguing. It’s just about the pies. And guess what? Seattle scored on the list of the top ten pizzerias in the country.Unsurprisingly, all the American pizza capitols were well represented. There was Modern Apizza from New Haven, CT, Di Fara from New York, Al Forno in Providence, RI, Coal Fire from Chicago, Pizzeria Mozza in L.A. (the one where Nancy Silverton, Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich all got together to try and create the greatest pizzas in the universe) and Pizzeria Bianco from Phoenix (which certain people think actually is the best pizzeria in the universe). Locally, Ken’s Artisan Pizza in Portland got the nod. And right here in Seattle, Tom Douglas’s Serious Pie made the list. And this was perfect because Playboy has always been serious about pie, right? This is what their pizza writer, Heather Shouse, had to say:Most foodies wouldn’t think of visiting Seattle and not hitting Pike Place Market. But what’s a tourist going to do with mounds of mushrooms, fishermen’s fresh catch and piles of produce? After ogling over the country’s oldest open-air market, head two blocks north for a proper lunch of the city’s best pizza. Tom Douglas is probably Seattle’s best-known chef, with six restaurants and a couple cookbooks under his belt. While he counts this pizzeria as one of those notches, you’re not likely to spot the guy sweating over the wood-fired oven. What you will find is a healthy wait, so order a couple of locally brewed Pike Kilt Lifters to pass the time. Once you’re seated, the reward is a swollen-edged pizza, lightly charred in all the right places and carefully dressed with toppings like buffalo mozzarella, roasted chantrelles and housemade pancetta. The best of the bunch gets ribbons of guanciale (think intense bacon) and pungent dandelion greens, with an over-easy egg smack dab in the middle. The breakfast of champions.Still, this is Playboy. Words ain’t exactly what they’re best known for. So you’ve got to click over to the site and check out some of the beautiful, pure food porn pictures they’ve got going over there. Because yeah, sometimes we really do look at Playboy just for the articles. And then, when we’re done, we go right back to looking at the nekkid ladies.Serious pie, indeed.
