Last week brought the opening of Mezcaleria Oaxaca, La Carta de Oaxaca’s

Last week brought the opening of Mezcaleria Oaxaca, La Carta de Oaxaca’s new sister restaurant in Queen Anne. Ever hopeful of seeing more diverse (and quality) dining options at the top of the hill, I was excited to check it out.The menu starts simple enough with tortilla chips, fried to order and served with either guacamole or refried beans. Continue down and you’ll find such things as tacos, tamales, pozole, mole, and enchiladas. There are also seafood offerings, including cocktel de camerones (prawns), ceviche de pescado, and caldo de mariscos (a nicely spicy seafood and vegetable soup). I was pleased with everything we ordered, and enjoyed the lively back room of the restaurant, full of character. (Note: Lively can also mean noisy, much like La Carta de Oaxaca.)It was the last item of the menu that was most intriguing: barbacoa de cabrito. This is goat that is chile-marinated and slow-roasted in a special cooker in that back dining room. The goat is served with beans and corn masa, and comes with fresh-made tortillas. You can partake from the salsa bar and make tacos, or just eat everything piecemeal. So what does Mezcaleria Oaxaca’s barbacoa de cabrito teach us about sex? It’s all about satisfying your curiosity.Goats are known to be intelligent and inquisitive animals. They are extremely curious, wanting to check out all the possibilities. They nibble at everything to see what tastes right and good. It’s the same with sex for some people. There’s a convenience to categorizing people as either exclusively heterosexual or homosexual. But when you go beyond behavior and consider thoughts, feelings, and fantasies, it’s clear that many are not attracted only to the same gender, or only to the other gender. Some act out their desires with both genders and acknowledge that they are bisexual, whereas others remain in a “wondering” stage and are bi-curious.In the 1950’s, sex researcher Alfred Kinsey developed his sexual orientation scale, positing that exclusive heterosexuality is a zero while exclusive homosexuality is a six. While a three is considered truly bisexual, most people are somewhere between a zero and a six, and therefore bisexual to at least some degree–even if they never act out their desires. We say that curiosity killed the cat. Sexually, I’d usually argue the opposite in terms of bi-curiosity. Not knowing can “kill” you, making you wonder if you’re living a life with a lack of fulfillment. Be like a goat: Get your mouth on what you want to try and see if it works for you.And when visiting Mezcaleria Oaxaca, do the same. Read through to the bottom of the menu and try something different. Get the goat. Not having an open mind is what gets my goat.Follow Voracious on Facebook and Twitter. Follow me on Twitter.
