Larry and Tabitha Kurofsky, the partners behind Heavy Restaurant Group (which already operates the Barrio and Purple Cafe brands) snuck in a new opening on Friday when they did a soft open for their new concept, Lot No. 3.Located at 460 106th Ave NE (in the Bellevue Towers), the new joint is a two-story pub and restaurant with seating for 100, late-night hours (running ’til 1am Tues-Sat and midnight Sunday and Monday), and a serious focus on two things that I do dearly love: brown liquors and snacks. The bulk of the menu appears, at first glance, almost spartan in its simplicity–just a bit of popcorn, a soft pretzel with housemade mustard, a plate of sardines or a plate of bacon. There’s salumi brought in from (where else?) Salumi, a couple salads, sandwiches (including a peanut butter, bacon and jelly and a classy hot dog) and a few dinner plates. But look closer and all of a sudden this place which claims to be about nothing more than simple bites and casual snacking starts to look a bit more serious. The sardines come over fingerling potatoes, dressed with a duck fat aioli. The deviled eggs are filled with smoked salmon. The simple baguette comes with butter made in-house (when’s the last time you heard of that?). On the sandwich board, there’s a duck confit slider with golden raisin verjus jam and cracklin’s (which sounds awesome, by the way). And though reasonably straightforward (two seafood, three meat, one veggie), the entree board even has its ragout bulked out with red beans, smoked ham hock, sauteed kale and finished with smoked duck gravy.Still, the place is being positioned as family-friendly and a place for neighbors and friends to get together for a couple bites to go with a couple of beers. I’m impressed by the care shown in the writing of the menu, and now my only question is whether the crew in the kitchen can live up to that kind of promise. From what I hear, the Friday soft opening was packed, and when things went live to the public on Monday, the crowds were pretty much the same. It’ll be my turn to check the place out soon enough, and as soon as I know more, you will, too.
