Komforte Chockolates (try to Google that with the correct spelling) is the brain child of a Seattle couple who launched the business last November. Currently, there are just three flavors: French Toast, Ramen Noodle and Tortilla Lime and Salt. The bars are slowly integrating themselves into local shops. I found these three at Uwajimaya, which recently started selling them. So, what do they taste like? Not comfort food. Instead of swaddling you in the warm memories of home-cooking, these bars present a familiarity; a sense of “Hey, I recognize this taste…but I can’t figure out where from.” Here’s a quick rundown:Ramen Noodle: Very Nestle Crunch-esque with its neutral-tasting crispy bits. The dark chocolate tastes darker than the 53% it claims on the wrapper. Salty on the back end. Nice, but nothing you haven’t tasted before.French Toast: Described as milk chocolate mixed with crunchy bits of French toast and a hint of cinnamon, this flavor does not resemble French toast in any way. That doesn’t mean it’s not good, though. Quite the contrary. It is reminiscent of those hard butterscotch candies. The flavor is surprisingly rich and salty. They just need to rename the bar, or change the flavor profile entirely.Pass the guacamole.Tortilla Lime and Salt: Holy Margaritaville! This bar is absolutely amazing. I thought this would be my least favorite of all the flavors, but it stole my heart. First, the lime jumps out at you, then a definite corn tortilla taste. The lime flavor is actually infused into the chips, which are then sprinkled with sea salt. You can see the tortilla chips throughout the bar. The flavor is beautifully balanced. Oddly enough, the Tortilla Lime and Salt tastes way less salty than the French Toast.I am excited to see what other flavors Komforte comes out with this year. The possibilities of chocolate and comfort food pairings seem endless. I, personally, would like to see a breakfast trio: coffee/pancakes/bacon.
