Just got off the phone with Ricardo Vaca, manager at El Mestizo (which I reviewed a few weeks back), and he confirmed for me that the new(ish) Mexican joint on Broadway will, in fact, be adding a couple breakfast shifts to their lunch-and-dinner schedule. As a matter of fact, they’re going to be doing it starting this weekend. Probably.”If everything goes fine, it should be starting Saturday,” Vaca told me. And though the kitchen will only be slinging breakfasts two days a week (Saturdays and Sundays), that’s still two more opportunities for a Mexican breakfast than existed prior to this weekend. So, score!Vaca said that, like the rest of El Mestizo’s menu, the new menu will be full of “classic, authentic Mexican breakfasts.” Which means egg dishes, chilaquiles, Mexican hot chocolate, breakfast tamales and atole–a masa-based breakfast drink spiked with cinnamon and piloncillo. For the first few weeks, the board will be short and tight–just nine items. But when I talked to him, Vaca was already looking into the future, saying that if everything went well and the breakfasts were popular he and the crew would “go from there.”So you know what that means, folks. Get thee down to El Mestizo this weekend and show them some love. Breakfast starts bright and early at 8am and will run through noon when the lunch menu goes into effect.
