Jerry Traunfeld’s much-hyped new Capitol Hill restaurant, Poppy, finally opens to the public (fanfare-free) tonight. I can’t tell: Is this a place that will satisfy the typical hunger pang, or leave customers craving drive-in on the way home?As a nod to the Indian culinary tradtion of “thali,” a platter used to deliver a variety of food, Traunfeld’s menu will offer diners 10 small dishes served at once — and not meant to be shared. Think a nightly $32 tasting menu that fuses the thali concept with Traunfeld’s herb-infused culinary style and you get the idea. After 17 years at The Herbfarm, Poppy will be a lesson in casual dining, but Traunfeld will still have access to an herb garden right outside his kitchen door. You can make reservations at Poppy beginning Saturday. If you visit Poppy, let us know what you think. Did you have to make a pit-stop at Dick’s afterwards?
