It ain’t exactly a champagne toast, but still…I know times are tough right now. I know money is tight everywhere. But say you’re a blushing Chinese bride-to-be and want to get the deed done with maximum savings and minimum effort. Where can you go?Straight to the Golden Arches, apparently, because (as reported in the South China Morning Post), Mickey D’s is getting into the wedding business in Hong Kong.Ceremony, reception, cake and catering for a hundred of your closest friends and family? About $400, U.S.–that’s the figure being tossed around by British newspapers (which are just all over this story) and Helen Cheung, Hong Kong McDonald’s director of corporate communications.Currently, the hot, salty wedding action is being restricted to just three restaurants in Hong Kong–an idea inspired by the fact that the Hong Kong Mickey D’s locations have actually gotten requests to hold weddings in them. This is Cheung, explaining herself, via Britain’s Daily Mail:”Over the past two years, we’ve started receiving calls from people who want to have a wedding party in our restaurants. There are about 10 calls a month. People said they’d dated here, or met here, and wanted to get married here. We see this as a business opportunity.”There are, however, a few small complications. For one, it’ll have to be a dry ceremony because there’s no booze allowed inside the McDonald’s locations. Hence the McSoda toast in the picture up top. Two, you’re going to have to wait a little bit because the McWedding program won’t be starting up until January 2011, according to Reuters. Third, according to the Daily Mail the locations where the weddings are being held will still be open to the public during the ceremony, meaning that brides and grooms will have to stand in line along with everyone else when it gets to McNugget time. And finally? It’s still a wedding inside a friggin’ McDonald’s–which is just one step better than getting hitched at one of those drive-thru wedding chapels in Vegas.Unless, of course, the McDonald’s locations are actually offering weddings at the drive-thru. Because that would just be the ultimate in American-style convenience.
