French Toast doughnutsThe Place: Mighty-O Donuts2110 N. 55th St., 547-0335The Hours: Daily, 4p.m. to 5p.m.The Digs: Mighty-O looks like the type of shop that would offer organic doughnuts — uber minimalist design, a couple of tables, and come-as-you-are vibe make this neighborhood haunt hard to resist. The place is equal parts homey and hippie, located smack-dab in the heart of Tangletown, the little enclave of bars and restaurants just up the hill from Green Lake. Mighty-O is crazy busy in the mornings as throngs of loyal customers jockey for the freshest doughnuts. Mighty-O is also an underutilized wi-fi spot for afternoon laptop sessions. You can sit, sip some coffee, and enjoy the smell of fresh baked doughnuts as you watch the neighborhood come alive. Chocolate Peanut ButterThe Deal: Half-off all doughnuts. That means you can get a classic doughnut (think glazed or cake) for 60-cents or a decadent doughnut (the ones with all the bells and whistles) for 85-cents. Mini doughnuts start at just 20-cents. Come early, though. These doughnuts fly out the door pretty quickly, and there’s no replenishing. Once these doughnuts are gone, they’re gone. The friendly Mighty-O staff tries to have the case full by 3:30p.m. every day, but that only lasts so long. On a recent Monday afternoon, we got to Mighty-O before 4:30p.m. and nearly lost out on the deal all together. Some of the most popular doughnuts right now are the seasonal ones: Blueberry and Raspberry Lemonade. We personally love the French Toast, Lemon Poppyseed and Peanut Butter Chocolate flavors. The Verdict: These vegan and organic doughnuts are hard to beat. Mighty-O makes their own trans-fat, cholesterol free mixes and glazes. If you’re on the fence about trying these “healthy” doughnuts, happy hour is a great, non-committal way to do so.
