Flickr: nwpeakbrewerGlorious, glorious beer! Here at Seattle Weekly, we’re always happy to see another booze lover embark on an adventurous alcohol-filled journey. That’s why we’re psyched for Kevin Klein, brewmaster and owner of NW Peaks Brewery, a new “nano-brewery” on Leary Way in Ballard. Klein’s an HIV researcher by day, but has been aggressively home-brewing for over 12 years. After a little nudging by his friends and some inspiration from Gilligan’s Brewing on the Burke-Gilman Trail, he brewed his first sellable stock this past November, and promptly sold out. Because of the operation’s small size, Klein isn’t focused on mass production. Instead he’s devised a CSA-esque system: a subscription-based beer club. Each month members throw down $11 (plus growler fee) and walk away with a seasonal, custom-made creation. Klein plans to create two new beers each month, using his own creativity to master the perfect pint. These “session-able” brews include malty brown beers and full, dry stouts for winter, then lagers (but no IPAS!) as Seattle heads into the summer. Klein named each of the beers after his personal love of rock climbing and the surrounding mountains, so expect monikers including Stuart, Sloan, and Sahale. Eventually he’s hoping to snag the brewery’s surrounding outdoor space to set up a tasting patio, but for now, signing up for a year’s subscription gets you two months free. Time to ditch Dry January and jump back on the beer-laden wagon. It feels good, right?
