Fans of zippy, tangy ginger beer will be happy to learn that Rachel Marshall, aka the founder of Rachel’s Ginger Beer, will open a shop in the new 12th Avenue Arts building in the spring. In addition to the beer selection, customers will be treated to hand-cut fries with up to 20 dipping sauces, ginger beer-based cocktails, and ice cream for floats. Who knew ginger beer was so versatile?
Hemingway fans get the name, and the rest of us will likely get the food as Renee Erickson alums Rachel Johnson and Joe Sundberg are gearing up to open Manolin on Stone Way in mid-December. The restaurant will feature Northwestern-themed food with a dash of Latin inspiration. Chef Alex Barkley, also an Erickson alum as sous of The Whale Wins, will man the pass and bring us dishes from the wood-fired oven. Game on, Walling-mont!
The FDA has recently approved new rules requiring calorie labels to be placed on all prepared foods sold by establishments with 20 or more locations. The Associated Press reports that the new regulations will also apply to convenience stores, bakeries, coffee shops, pizza delivery, amusement parks, and vending machines. In other news, the ability to enjoy eating and drinking without guilt, remorse, or long-term neurosis has suffered yet another serious blow. E
