Faire Gallery Cafe

A cup of coffee at this Cap Hill hangout buys you access to art shows, board games, and performances.

In French, faire means “to do” or “to make,” and the great ambitions of the friendly young local couple, Matt and Liz, who opened Faire Gallery Cafe a few months ago, extend from the menu to the walls. Faire is already attracting an artsy and urban audience to the corner of East Olive Way and Melrose Avenue. Rich Caffé Umbria coffee, Mighty O Donuts ($1), Cupcake Royale cupcakes ($2), and a wine and beer list that includes champagne, lagers, ambers, stouts, and porters are the tasty basics you’ll find at Faire. Except for bottles of wine or champagne, the prices on the menu hover around $4–$6 for drinks or food. From the menu of vegan, vegetarian, and carnivore-friendly grilled sandwiches, their signature Jessixawich sandwich with turkey, provolone, avocado, and tomato on a croissant ($5) looked particularly good. Snack plates ($4), like one with cheese and crackers, and salads ($4) are also served up. Matt and Liz have the walls booked with monthly artist shows until February 2007, and the two hope to use Faire as an all-ages venue to showcase up-and-coming local musicians, comedians, and anyone else with a talent to show off. Amazingly tall windows, a second-story loft, views toward Lake Union, brick-and-robin’s-egg walls, and simple wood furniture complement one another agreeably, giving the cafe an airy, artistic energy. Board games, TV, and Wi-Fi are also clutch Faire amenities. A definite “to do.” KATIE BECKER
