credit:groceryoutlet.com/Seattle-WA/Grocery Outlet, the discount grocery store chain based in California, is opening a new shop at 1702 Fourth Ave. S., with a grand opening tentatively scheduled for March 13. For those of you who live within walking distance of multiple gleaming grocery stores, this might seem less than newsworthy, but it’s good news for the few (and proud) who live in SoDo, Georgetown, or Pioneer Square. One has to be willing to shop carefully, read all expiration dates, and be a bit brave. That said, one might score a great deal on locally made Greek yogurt or bulk quantities of flaxseed, or indulge a craving for highly processed, preformed, frozen Toll House chocolate-chip cookies. More wholesome greens also abound, as well as the occasional cool T-shirt. Consider it thrift-store grocery shopping: a bit of work, a bit of an adventure, and maybe some good wine for a great price. “As consumers are trading down in their wine choices,” explains Grocery Outlet’s Peyton Robertson, “there is a lot of excess inventory out there, and Grocery Outlet is snatching it up and making it available at 50 to 70 percent off regular retail prices. Additionally, with many importers, wineries, and distributors going out of business, Grocery Outlet has had the opportunity to offer more varieties of high-quality wine to its customers.”
