Christine Keff, ready to workYesterday, we wrote about Seatown Snackbar, the new walk-up and take-away joint opened by Tom Douglas right next door to Etta’s Seafood, his well-known Pike Place outpost. And while no one doubts the genius of a casual place selling sandwiches, rotisserie meats, and offering an entire section of its menu devoted to nothing but crab, Douglas wasn’t the only owner in town looking to capitalize on that vital section of the dining public who fear chairs. No, it seems that Christine Keff of Flying Fish was also looking to get a piece of that market, and Tuesday she opened On The Fly–a kind of adjunct operation to her new Flying Fish space at 300 Westlake Ave. N., and also operating right next door. As a matter of fact, the two spaces aren’t really just adjacent, they actually share the same kitchen.Keff mentioned the impending opening of On The Fly in the middle of her Grillaxin’ interview with Leslie Kelly two weeks ago, but even then, the details were thin. I know it’s a largely take-out business, offering sandwiches, bottles of wine, deli items, some dry goods and some of the classics (in particular, the cocottes) off her Flying Fish menu. I know it’s running on short hours right now (10 a.m. ’til 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday). And until I can get there myself, that’s pretty much all I know.Still, something tells me it won’t be that long before I make it to the neighborhood. There’s just something about the draw of artfully done food, pre-made and ready to take walking, that makes my traditional non-work-night dinners of leftover pizza, beer and potato chips seem somewhat less than completely satisfying. So as soon as I know more, you’ll know more. And in the meantime, if any of you have already been in to check the place out, give a shout down in the comments section. I’d love to know what you thought of it.
