Ben, mixing up some of La Isla’s best. The Watering Hole: La Isla, 2320 N.W. Market St. BALLARDThe Atmosphere: It’s almost unnoticed amidst the boutique shops on of Market Street. However, one step in the door and La Isla’s sexy demeanor reaches out in the form of good-looking staff and intimate table arrangements. Practically elbow-rubbing a neighbor is bound to bring about some lusty looks in this Puerto Rican restaurant. The Barkeep: Outdoor enthusiast Ben Capdeviellek, from Omaha, Nebraska. He’s been tending bar at La Isla for only four months, but he’s no amateur. He previously worked at King’s Hardware in Ballard, along with the Collins Pub near Pioneer Square. Just ask him any question about gin and its distilling process, and you’ll be entertained (or glassy-eyed) for an hour. The Drink: On the menu, it’s known as the Surfing Rincon. Consisting of three rums (white, banana, and coconut) and a splash of pineapple juice, it’s shaken to create a frothy head and served over crushed ice. Keep those Surfing Rincon’s comin’!The Verdict: Ben’s not the type of fellow to skimp on alcohol. Just like the fans on La Isla’s Web site state, the tropical drinks are pleasantly strong. On nights when La Isla brings in a band, it would make a refreshing quencher in between stints on the dance floor. If you’re lucky, Ben will even make another specialty of his: gin straight up, with a sprig of cilantro that serves as an effective breath freshener.
