Zappa Plays Zappa

Saturday, January 3 and Sunday, January 4

For nearly three years now, Dweezil Zappa has been fulfilling his destiny: To keep the music of Frank Zappa, his legendary musician/composer father, alive by playing it himself. After holing up for a couple of years to learn some of the elder Zappa’s sprawling, famously complicated, bewildering and exhilarating back catalog, Dweezil’s been touring with a six-piece band that’s featured various members of Frank’s old band (this leg stars Zappa in New York-era singer-guitarist Ray White). If you’ve caught them live or just seen some footage, you know that they’ve been more than doing the material justice, and the shows have been quite emotional, too. Says Dweezil: “When you get onstage and start seeing peoples’ reactions to stuff, and then certain melodies hit you like a ton of bricks… there’s plenty of times when the whole band is in tears.”
