Velella Velella

Saturday, March 29

The Velella jellyfish, a cobalt invertebrate with sail-like

appendages, should be proud to share its name with Seattle

electro-funk groovemasters Velella Velella. With their space-age disco

sound, Velella Velella fuse the organic and the synthesized to create

a unique animal that manages to distinguish itself from all the

electro-pop you’ve heard before. Using a veritable genus of

synthesizers from Farfisas to Honer Clavinets, Velella Velella

electrify the ’70s funk element without straying too far into

up-tempo, techno-remix territory, thereby avoiding the pitfalls of a

pounding bass fusing all the songs into one tooth-rattling track. With

their slower, airier numbers, Velella Velella achieve excellent

results while providing some variation on their general dance-club

theme. Five months ago, the band released its second album, an EP

titled Flight Club, on HUSH Records, an otherwise Portland-centric

record label. This show will be the last in the Seattle area for a

while before Velella Velella kick off a national tour, so be sure to

take part in the groovy extravaganza before the band heads out into

Eastern waters. With Locke and Umami. SARA BRICKNER
