German-born, U.K.-based electronic composer/producer Ulrich Schnauss is a man who can reveal as much about himself through his music as his music can reveal to the listeners about themselves. Theres something both undeniably beautiful and arrestingly sad captured on his latest, Goodbye (hopefully the title is referencing moving away from the past, rather than suggesting that this is his swan songthough itd sure be a great way to go out). Schnauss builds the songs up with a methodical, gentle caress, stacking layers upon layers of sublime frequencies, dreamlike tones, filtrated instrumentation (including piano, harmonica, and drums), and the waterfall-washed vocals of both himself and Judith Beck to envelop the songs isolated soul in a warm, comforting blanket. Absolutely gorgeous. With the Turn-Ons and the High Violets.
