Swedish-born troubadour du jour Jens Lekman has a way with theatrics, as evidenced from the am I getting a haircut or experiencing ecstasy? cover art of his latest LP, Night Falls Over Kortedala. Theres also the Broadway-ish strings-and-horns swelling of the opening track, And I Remember Every Kiss. Its a step up from his earlier twee-pop/Nordic folk
efforts and a good lesson in seeing how samples can turn an album from beach lounge music with African beats to a happy, folksy version of Danielson or a grandiose, ever-changing Sufjan at the drop of a hat. RIYL mango tea, Belle and Sebastianesque moods, the poetry of Morrissey, and controlled, delicate epics. Mr. Lekman, accompanied by openers the Honeydrips and Marla Hansen, graces us with his presence between visits to Europe and Coachella.
