The Von Bondies

Wednesday, May 28

Remember when Mike Tyson shockingly got taken out by Buster Douglas back in 1990? It didn’t take “Iron Mike” very long to recover, knocking out longtime nemesis Henry Tillman just four months later, and eventually regaining both the WBA and WBC heavyweight titles. You may also remember that back in 2003, at a Detroit nightclub, White Stripes front man Jack White got into an altercation with Von Bondies front man Jason Stollsteimer—a one-time friend whose band he’d produced—and pummeled his face into hamburger (for which White was fined and ordered to attend anger-management classes). Nearly five years later, Stollsteimer’s once-promising career has yet to fully recover. Purveyors of flamethrowing, Stooges-y garage-punk, the VBs haven’t released an album since early 2004’s Pawn Shoppe Heart, and in the interim guitarist Marcie Bolen and bassist Carrie Smith quit. Nonetheless, the retooled quartet is back on the road, here in town for the first time in nearly four years, and a new album, Love, Hate and Then There’s You, is slated for release sometime this summer. There’s still some fight left in these guys yet.
