When Bastian comes across a book called “The Neverending Story” in an old bookstore, the owner says he can take it—but that reading it may be dangerous. Bastian ignores the warning and is soon swept away into the whimsical, dream-based land of Fantastica. But he realizes he’s in for more than he bargained for when the story calls for a human child to rescue the land from a dark menacing force. The film adaptation of Michael Ende’s wildly popular children’s book came out in 1984, and it’s interesting to see how much of that era has infiltrated Seattle Children’s Theatre’s current production: they’ve collaborated with Ann and Nancy Wilson to develop the music and David Bowie seems to have unknowingly inspired many of the costumes. The nostalgia aspect of The Neverending Story may evade children, but those in their 20s will be thrilled to see the cult classic make such a marvelous return.
