A lot of music these days is just too clean. Factoring in new gear, and all the various digital processes that go into production, much of the grit and scuzz heard in all those old rock n roll/R&B records has been diluted, filtered, and wiped from our ears. I guess this didnt register with me until I heard the punk soul doo-slop of The King Khan and BBQ Show on last years Whats for Dinner?, a record that has been tearing me up over the past few months. The Montreal duo is the prom band for a prom of rebels, with a coin-in-the-pocket jangle permeating out of fuzzy vintage amps, messy guitars, shitty drums and mikes, right onto the sweat-soaked dance floor where lovers and fighters meet. The Black Lips basically learned everything they know from these guysits time you learn something too. With Coconut Coolouts, the Fucking Eagles, and American Relay.
