If Saddle Creek’s Ladyfinger and Mt. Fuji band Little Brazil aren’t enough reason for you to head to the Sunset, pick up a copy of local band the Coyotes’ record, The Earth Was Opening Over Me, over at HTML Times. On some tracks, scruffy free jazz sax (pretty sure that’s what it is, anyhow) tangos with psychedelic guitar riffs. These are the numbers I like best. Other tracks sound more like straightforward folk songs accented with classical guitar picking, a little piano, and a more subdued horn section. However you slice it, it’s definitely an ambitious piece of work, and therefore somewhat rough around the edges, but listen to “Eyebrows, No Eyebrows,” “The Pagoda 710,” “Foot Steps,” and “An Old Home,” and I think you’ll agree: this is definitely a band to keep an eye on.
