It’s slightly surreal to see the Beach Boys’ Mike Love and Brian Wilson onstage together again after all these years. For decades, the two founding members have represented diametrically opposed versions of the band: Wilson as the reclusive and troubled artistic genius of Pet Sounds and SMiLE; Love as the crass, commercial, “Kokomo”-singing, Hawaiin-shirted ham (with Full House’s Uncle Jesse on drums). Trouble was, you could only see the latter version live. Now, with the release of the Beach Boys’ first album of new material in 20 years, That’s Why God Made the Radio, and with Wilson’s mental health problems resolved enough for him to appear onstage (if still looking totally shell-shocked), fans can witness one of the most fruitful creative oppositions in rock history, and one more sharply defined than Mick v. Keith and John v. Paul combined. ERIC GRANDY
