Tara Jane O’Neil

Sunday, October 28

Immensely intriguing and totally arresting was singer/guitarist Tara Jane O’Neil’s performance at the Showbox a couple of years ago, opening for Slint. As she and her band played sparse, spectral, sometimes unsettling indie folk—kind of a cross between Nick Drake and (lunatic years) Cat Power—an older, possibly intoxicated gentleman-cum-performance artist with graying samurai-styled hair, a dress, a ratty bathrobe, and black shoes pirouetted around the stage while cradling a cinder block. Fairly surreal has been TJO’s career trajectory, too—she’s gone from playing bass in Louisville, Ky., art punks Rodan to crafting lo-fi noise-folk in Retsin to relocating to Portland and making beautifully haunted albums in abandoned houses around town. With Jenny Hoyson and Flexions.
