Summer Jam

Music

No, not your Aunt Edith’s raspberry preserves. KUBE 93.3’s annual Summer Jam is less homey but plenty tart. This year’s lineup of internationally-acclaimed artists includes Ludacris, Nas, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Baby Boy, Mike Jones, T-Pain, and the Shop Boyz. Summer Jam V.I.P. Ludacris (along with T.I. and E-40) was a highlight of last year’s festival, and he’s heroically recommitted for 2007. Mellifluous veteran rappers Bone Thugs-n-Harmony have made something of a post-Bizzy Bone comeback with this year’s Strength & Loyalty. But—despite fans’ deepest wishes—they probably won’t be able to smuggle Mariah Carey past airport security to perform their duet “Lil’ L.O.V.E.” live. A small sampling of hip-hop’s latest graduating class is attending, too. Hurricane Katrina survivor Baby Boy da Prince is evidence of New Orleans’ enduring music scene, and might lend some solemnity to the occasion. Newcomers T-Pain and Mike Jones, on the other hand, appear to just barely manage to drag themselves out of the club to join the other platinum-selling artists.
