Just when I was at my Chris Crocker boiling point and about to give up on YouTube forever, I watched a video of the Ronettes singing “Be My Baby” to a shrieking studio audience circa 1963. Ronnie Spector’s live voice sent a shock wave through me, but I noticed in the background two rows of go-go dancers doing a vigorous routine of shimmies and shakes, adding a jolt of goofiness to this love song that always sounds so sad. Miniskirted twist-and-shouters were a crucial element to the 1960s discotheque, and that’s a detail the organizers of the Studio 66 mod parties are wise not to omit. Their bimonthly at the Lo_Fi features go-go dancing from Tangerine Tonic, in addition to DJs mining the best of Nuggets-era mod and garage rock. Tonight, Tacoma’s the Fucking Eagles headline the gig, which is rounded out by the Pop Machine and DJs Chrispo, Vodka Twist, and Gort. They’ll make you happy, baby, just wait and see. RACHEL SHIMP
