Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven

Blunt observations about a dual ethnic heritage

Think a woman being repeatedly slapped in the face to the point of tears might make for an arty and entertaining night out? (At first I thought it was happening in a movie or behind a screen, but then there it was onstage.) Then by all means see Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven. This controversial off-Broadway show by Young Jean Lee, a Pullman native known for her surprising and brutal work, is, as she puts it, her “Anti-Korean identity attempt at a Korean identity play.” Not sure exactly what that means, but with a subtitle like (A Show About White People in Love) there’s bound to be plenty here to tell your friends about over drinks the next day. Friday’s show features a post-performance discussion with Lee herself. On the Boards, 100 W. Roy St., 217-9888, www.ontheboards.org. $24. 8 p.m. Thurs., March 6-Sun., March 9. FRANK PAIVA
