The Seahawks’ 2-10 record this season can be viewed one of two ways. On the one hand, they obviously suck, their season devastated by an unseemly broth of gimpy receivers, overrated defenders, and general ineptitude. On the other hand, the Hawks’ two wins represent our fair city’s only big-time football victories of 2008, what with the Huskies enjoying a historically bad 0-11 campaign. (To be sure, this hardly represents a half-full/half-empty scenario.) Meanwhile, the Hawks’ opponent today, the New England Patriots, lost Tom Brady—the best player in the game, much less their team—to injury for the season in its very first game, a setback that would have rendered most teams terminally ill. But the Patriots aren’t most teams, and hence have stayed in playoff contention despite the fact that Brady’s replacement at quarterback, Matt Cassel, wasn’t even good enough to start in college. Such composure in the face of a storm really puts the Seahawks’ shockingly disappointing season in perspective—and the view ain’t pretty.
