Think of this as a hip-hop battle of the bands, only instead of groups, its 1012 local producers who place their beats in a head-to-head competition. Whoever rouses the crowd the most advances to the next round, until only two producers are left to show off their best beats. Created by top-shelf producer Vitamin D and manager Jonathan Moore, Big Tune beat battle started locally, and this year spread nationally. Over the summer, producers in L.A., Chicago, Houston, and New York put their beats on the judging block. Those who won the battles in those cities will be flown into Seattle on Nov. 1 for the national finals. But not before this Friday, when our homegrown producers give it a shot.
