Phosphorescent is Matthew Houck, a New York-based musician whose emotional and spiritual ties to his Southern upbringing resonate through his gently restrained folk music. On Pride, his first release for Secretly Canadian sister label Dead Oceans, Houck has taken a more careful, reserved and constructive approach to the songs than past recordings, capturing the graceful, dreamy, and haunting ambience of his faintly warm spirituality and emotional redemption throughout. Piano, guitars, backing harmonies, back-porch rattles and howls, and lightly tapped tambourines, take Houck and Phosphorescents music to places where all the uncertain souls of the world can go to find a piece of themselves. Beautiful, indeed.
