Phoebe Damrosch

Life in the restaurant trenches

Come to Licorous this Tuesday night for a happy two hours of restaurant dirt, whether it’s for curiosity or catharsis. Shoot the breeze with author Phoebe Damrosch, who will sign copies of her new book, Service Included: Four-Star Secrets of an Eavesdropping Waiter. The author’s debut book describes the inner workings of the service industry, and she’s not talking Applebee’s (though we all had to start somewhere). Damrosch was the first female captain at Per Se, Thomas Keller’s ego-cum-restaurant in Manhattan. In her book, she expounds on everything from the very bad behavior of customers (and employees) to the bizarre social rituals of celebrities (more finicky than a room full of two-year-olds). For service industry refugees who were bored to tears by the redacted-for-the-masses Kitchen Confidential, Ms. Damrosch is a funnier, less self-aborbed narrator with a far juicier tale.
