“People Doing Strange Things With Electricity”

The sexiest science fair you ever did see

Ever pondered the aesthetics of five-digit numbers? Joe Benner did during a job that involved entering them repeatedly into a keypad, and discovering that some appealed to him more than others. After asking a group of people to rate the visual appeal of a particular batch, the piece he created for the third annual “People Doing Strange Things with Electricity” shows some of their responses. In another piece, Rebecca Cummins gathered work by prominent Northwest glass artists, shot the pieces with a 22 rifle, and captured the impact with a sound-triggered flash. Shannon Eakins’ Flock is a series of kinetic bird sculptures, and the programmer/artists in Accelerator Group have made a living work of art via a 20’ section of wall, computer-controlled audio-visual triggers, and you. Organizers Dorkbot-Seattle aim to unite “artistic techies and techie artists,” and they’ve corralled more than two dozen of them for this dumbfounding show. At least to someone whose only trick is rubbing their feet in a department store elevator and giving a spark-filled kiss.
